Drop through grain hoppers are often used on top of grain bins where you might have a fixed auger across the top of two bins, and the auger is feed by a spout or another auger.  By opening the bottom gate, you can discharge through the hopper into the first bin,then close the gate and turn the auger on and it will go to next bin.
